Sounding instantly like an extension of 2012’s non-album single, R U Mine?, today saw the release of a brand new Arctic Monkeys track. Entitled ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ I can confirm that you definitely do. As aforementioned, the beginning of the track is very reminiscent of R U Mine? This isn’t a bad thing at all and things are shaping up nicely for the band’s imminent fifth studio album, due for release later in the year. If every track has the matured, heavier sound the band seemed to have adopted over the past couple of years then this album might well become their best yet. Since 2006 debut, ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not’, it’s not only the sound which has matured but also the song writing. 7 years has seen Alex Turner singing about girls looking good on the dancefloor and red lights in taxi’s, indicating the doors are secure to singing about love and experiences people come face to face with when growing up. One of the most noticeable things in the new song is Arctic Monkey’s now have a very bold bassline. Bordering on becoming another indie band attempting to give their songs a drum & bass edge, the guys sensibly know the limit and don’t cross it at all, giving the song a further dimension in to the band’s already instantly recognisable sound. Some might say it doesn’t work but in my eyes, it definitely does. In fact, it works really well. So, spend some of this evening listening to this very welcome surprise from Sheffield’s finest indie band.

Do I Wanna Know is available now on iTunes
