AN INTERVIEW WITH…DEAP VALLY

Over the past year, two girls from LA have cemented themselves as “the new White Stripes” and gained a legion of fans in the process. They’ve supported the likes of Muse, The Vaccines and Mumford & Sons. Also in the past year, they’ve released debut album, Sistrionix and played numerous festivals. A pretty impressive beginning you have to admit. I recently spoke to drummer of the band, Julie Edwards. Here’s what she had to say:

How did Deap Vally start?
A fissure in the universal tissue of time-space expanded into a rip, which then became a psychic storm into which Lindsey and I fell and found each other in. In other words, we met at a crochet class and then started jamming.

Who were your musical influences growing up and do they differ to your inspirations now?
Les Miserables, West Side Story, Janet Jackson, Debussy. I’d say there’s a little of all of that in the music we make. But these days I’m more directly inspired by Led Zeppelin, Rage Against the Machine and Robert Johnson.

What current bands do you enjoy?
Father John Misty, JJUUJJUU. Savages, Tame Impala, Pond, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, WAVVES

You’ve supported The Vaccines on their tour, who would be your dream band to support for?
Red Hot Chili Peppers! They are so funky fresh.

There’s recently been a lot of female strong bands to hit the music scene, each bringing their own style and sound to the table. How would you describe Deap Vally’s sound and style?
Heavy minimal soul in the tradition of classic rock and Mississippi blues.

For those that haven’t yet purchased your debut album, SISTRIONIX, what can they expect to hear from it?
SISTRIONIX runs the emotional gamut. Pick up a copy today!

What’s been the best and worst gig you’ve played so far?
Worst gig: Lindsey lost her voice and we had to literally force this woman in a red dress on stage to sing Gonna Make My Own Money.

Best gig: Usually always the last one we played, which in this case was in a packed, sweaty dive bar in Melbourne, Australia.

Your doing some UK Shows this year, do you guys like being in the UK?
Of course! Castles and druid burial mounds! Flapjacks! The Royals! What’s not to love!

The UK seem to have embraced the recent influx of LA bands (Haim, Kendrick Lamar and yourselves), What do you think it is which makes us relate to your guys music so well?
People in the UK just don’t realize how dumb our accents sound because they seem exotic. But don’t be fooled…
