MOJO20’S FAVOURITE / SONGS OF 2015

2015 has gone incredibly quick and we’re now at the end of it. TV, Film and music this year has been incredibly strong so as always, we’re letting you know what songs stood out for us. Do you agree or disagree with our choices? Either way, let us know which songs you enjoyed throughout 2015.

Stuart’s choices:

Tame Impala released their third studio album ‘Currents’ earlier this year and it’s no surprise that my favourite album of the year would feature my favourite track of 2015. This Dane floor filler with its catchy baseline & sadly relatable subject matter has been on repeat ever since I first heard it.

Also featuring Norah Jones, this track serves as a hypnotising and beautiful addition to what was a flawless LP release. ‘Crosseyed Heart’ has it all from gritty blues riffs, classic covers of old standards, upbeat rock n roll to broken-hearted blues but ‘Illusion’ has it all and became one of the best songs I heard all year.

The punk duo from Royal Tunbridge Wells really owned this year but I must admit, for someone who discovered them in early 2014, in my eyes they ran the new music scene last year with songs like ‘Where’s Your Car Debbie?’ & ‘Hey’. So after releasing their latest record ‘Are You Satisfied?’ in 2015, they accompanied it with the fast paced, hard-hitting ‘Sockets’. This one woke me up to them again and had me going after the new album as quick as I could.

Following an amazing showing at Glastonbury this past year, the buzz for this band has been huge and it’s not surprising with one of the best debut albums this year and each single release being more impressive than the last. However it was this track that stood out as a favourite and still has me looking forward to playing it every Transmission.

In keeping with the theme, it really has seemed to be consistency that won it all this year and Everything Everything fit perfectly into the category of great return accompanied by a brilliant new record. The biggest single from the new LP ‘Get to Heaven’. With their obscure style and absolute lack of ability to structure a boring song, ‘Regret’ was one of the catchiest and fun songs that came out of the summer of 2015.

Robert’s choices:

Foals absolutely dominated the majority of 2015 with releases such as What Went Down and Mountain At My Gates from fourth studio album, What Went Down. It was however London Thunder from this incredible album that stood out for me. A slow love ballad amidst the heavy guitar riffs showcases the raw talent the band has. Definitely one I can’t wait to hear live in February.

As most people know, The Maccabees are my favourite band and can do no wrong in my eyes. Fourth album, Marks To Prove It saw them obtain their first number one album and it was this song that gained them a new legion of fans. Definitely a stand out track for the year as it meant that “my boys” were back!

The Libertines returned in 2015 with third album, Anthems For Doomed Youth, 11 years since their second self-titled album, The Libertines. The new album wasn’t amazing but Gunga Din is a great comeback tune highlighting issues the band have had in the past and their now reconciliation. Can’t wait to hear this one live in January.

I really didn’t like this song when it was first released with its new-ish direction for the band and line-up change to boot, I wasn’t happy and longed for “the good old says” of Helicopter & Banquet. The track randomly decided to appear on my iPhone whilst on a Spotify shuffle binge whilst out jogging. Turns out, it’s catchy as hell and an absolute mood changer. I’m off to see Bloc Party next year and with the new album being released in January, I can’t wait to hear this live and bust some moves.

I’m not proud that this has made my choices for favourite song of the year but this year saw a whole new group of people coming beliebers as Justin Bieber dropped a couple of catchy as fuck tunes with Sorry and What Do You Mean? I still think he’s a prick and I’ve definitely not got Bieber Fever. I’ve merely got a case of Bieber sniffles at best.
