Waking up on any given day in 2017 is a minefield and usually involves discovering some awful or tragic news from the hours in which we were all asleep. It’s occurring more and more recently whether it be news of war or violence, political disappointment or the passing of a star or icon. The latter example became far too familiar in 2016 and the trend continued into this year also. On the third of October 2017, in the early hours of the morning we said goodbye to a rock music legend and one of the greatest songwriters of all time as Tom Petty passed away at 66 years of age. The frontman of The Heartbreakers was one of the fronting figures of music in the 70’s and 80’s, finding fame with tracks like ‘American Girl’, ‘Learning To Fly’, ‘Won’t Back Down’ and ‘Free Fallin’. He was also known as being a part of the supergroup The Travelling Wilburys, and is actually the third to pass (following Roy Orbison & George Harrison), leaving us with only two members remaining (Bob Dylan & Jeff Lynne) but whilst also leaving behind a legacy and career that not many could replicate. Most are waking up to the news, as did we and after a scan through the official reports, we extend our respect and adoration for the life and music of Tom Petty.
