SMERZ / HALF LIFE

It was at this years Lost Village festival that we discovered the wonder of Smerz. We were lucky enough to catch them live (you can find the exclusive gig review here) and fell in love with their minimal yet exciting electro flavour. Following the performance, we got a hold of their 2016 album ‘Okey’ which is also an absolute triumph. So of course, when the news hit that Smerz had released new and original material, we went running and as brand new single ‘Half Life’ was unveiled, Mojo20 were there to enjoy it.

The same trends and themes continue on from ‘Okey’ which is extremely good news, as they continue to ooze cool and work almost exclusively with around four sounds which they place and implement with extreme effectiveness. It has an ability to act as a musical bookend, straddling both ends of the spectrum at once. The vocals are laid back and soft, cool and smooth. The music is jagged, tweaked and up tempo. The two ideas gel together with ease but the song becomes impossible to define. That’s ok though, the best music can’t be pigeon holed and labelled. All we need to know is that it’s unique, it’s artistic and it’s fun. This duo from Norway has our attention and I’m already anticipating their next moves. Until then…
